What we are tasting for summer…..
June 2, 2009
Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc
This Sauvignon Blanc from the Colchuga Valley is mostly clear with a hint of green reflection. The nose is that of a traditional Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with gooseberry, a pineapple/grapefruit/lime character, and a note suggesting a dry taste on the palate. In the mouth it is juicy, showing the fruit, and an excellent balance of acidity and minerality throughout the crisp finish. This highly awarded wine is a classic example of beautifully done Chilean Sauvignon Blanc at a bargain basement price.
Lageder Pinot Bianco
This unique grape hails from the northern most region of Italy, Alto Adige. The color is a vibrant yellow with a slight tint of green. The pronounced nose consists of a brilliant green apple scent, mixed in with that of pear and peach. On the palate you’ll find an elegant tropical fruit flavor with brilliant acidity and a long finish—think of this wine for the drinker who wants a pinot grigio with a bit more kick! Works wonderfully as an aperatif, or also paired with salads as well as a number of pasta and seafood dishes. An outstanding summer wine and a phenomenal value.
Bouchaine Chardonnay
This Chardonnay hails from the Carneros region in California. The golden-hue color suggests classic chardonnay, but after that it’s all the winemaker, Michael Richmond. The complex nose has hints of green apple, floral notes, as well as a nutty almond scent. Once on the palate, the complexity continues to where one can’t put a simple finger on the tastes going on. This medium bodied wine displays a delicate richness, as well as fruits of pineapple, apple, pear, peach, lime…I find something new each time I try it. A slight nutty character gives way to a smooth, almost white burgundian finish. Truly a chardonnay worth celebrating and enjoying.
